DC may be ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT or INCREDIBLY STUPID. IE: What I think/hope DC may be doing.

"DON'T MIND THE MEN BEHIND THE CURTAIN."


It's been a shocking week for DC Fans. And the above quote kind of symbolizes the attitude that DC has given in being so mum on the new DCU aside from showing some covers.


I know you and I may differ on our opinions about what this new DC means however I have come up with a theory on why I believe that now is the time they need to start a new. I will outline certain aspects that go into my thinking and then I will tell you point blank what it is. 

DC Entertainment was put into place to maximize the opportunities of those that that our beloved characters can aspire to. They put someone like Dianne Nelson into power because she has a near flawless track record overseeing the Harry Potter franchise and making so that it was loyal in most aspects to the books that were written.

And now I think that it is entirely possible that DC Entertainment is finally doing what is necessary to take on the competition and why they have turned around on why they feel that they need a DC-ON-FILM universe. It is said that they want a Justice League film and a re-imagined Batman film by 2013. It's also said that Johns and Lee have something HUGE to bring to Hero Complex. A bombshell announcement. I don't know if they already screwed the pooch by telling everyone that things were changing. But they seem so sure that this new idea is going to work while the fans are outraged, and rightfully so in some cases. And these changes are the most radical since Crisis On Infinite Earths. 

I think I also know why it is so important to them to reboot Batman and why they can't use Nolan's version. The reason being is there just isn't enough development within the movies themselves yet for it to make sense. I think if they really wanted to they could build off the Nolan verse though comic books if that's what they wanted Batman to be. I mean, eventually the Nolanverse could be adapted to otherworldly aspects just like in due time in our world we may have encounters from beings of otherworldly origin. 

I ask you what is the one way that could be a guaranteed way to increase readership among comic and movie fans? A way to make the comics mandatory and the movie mandatory. What if they are going to make the Justice League film and ALL the new films we are seeing from GL to The Man Of Steel to the new Batman films part of the continuity? It's never been done before in the history of any of the major comic companies. But it's a sure fire way to make sure that this drastic move is the right way to go. I think that it would make the drastic changes bearable and most of all actually make sense to the long time readers. We could actually be apart of something incredible. 

And it would make me as a fan feel so much better in their direction. If this turns out to be true I will completely embrace the new DCU. It is something that will give the fans that hate previous films for their lack of characterization happy. It would broaden the readership in a sure fire way because people will have to read the books to know where the story is going although these movies may stand on there own just fine and for those that LOVE the movies it will make them want to see what happens next in the books and future movies.

What do you think? Can DC possibly be this brilliant? Can they possibly be this bold? Or is all this reboot debacle simply just doing it because they can? Nothing like this has ever been done in the history of comic books. There have been series that have continued from where TV Shows have left off. But not ones that build up to and then continue from where a movie franchise left off. 

I can only hope that I am right. The clues are there for this to be the case.

And if not. DAMN THE MAN, SAVE THE EMPIRE!

I like others am pretty upset that some of our defining stories are basically finding themselves thrown into the void. But it is my intent of this blog not to kill DC as a company but to do my best to help not just myself but what seems like a wave of people in the world steer DC back into sanity during this momentary lapse.

I am not naive. I know that this blog will do nothing in the slightest to make a dent in their decision. However, thinking that something like this can't help would be foolish. We see it happen every single day. 

My message to the fans today is DO NOT DROP BOOKS! I certainly wont. (AT LEAST NOT YET.)

 I am only a Batman reader so it may be easier for me to say that then those that read the entire line. However, by dropping books we would only put the integrity of the company that we love so much in jeopardy. Much like if no one picked up the garbage our cities' integrity would suffer. (wink)

APATHY ISN'T THE ANSWER HERE. How are we going to be able to tell them just exactly what it is that we miss without knowing what we are missing? 

Just think about that.

And then when you do buy in September and it is remarkable keep on buying. If not, then come October show DC why we are the fans and what we mean to their company. 

Our Future Is Staring Us Down.

And there we have it folks. Our future is staring us down. We are in a gun fight with yet but knives. 70 plus years of great stories are going down the drain as if they never even happened and we are stuck with what we thought were collectibles but now possibly outside of monetary means just garbage. 


But ask yourselves in or own world where even presidential elections are stolen and voted on based on what the lesser evil really maybe, ask yourselves, what is the lesser evil here? 


Are we truly ready for a reboot? Or is it just going to be crammed down our throats like Obamacare (Which I actually support but feel is wrong as the majority doesn't.) 


DC has done some very radical things in the past. Infinite Crisis and Final Crisis and all the meaningless deaths and everything aside doesn't even match the sorrow I will feel once the seminal books Action and Detective are renumbered. 


I am starting to lose faith in DC Comics creative direction. Don't get me wrong. I have loved a lot of the stuff that most people hated. I loved all the recent crisis's and the now Batman Inc and evolution of the characters in general. 


It's almost a blasphemy in itself this renumbering of sorts. I can't believe they are just going to effectively spit in the legacy books like Action and Detective. I mean, they didn't renumber them after COIE, IC, FINAL CRISIS or any other time. 


Has anyone else noticed that their ideas keep on getting more and more radical? Infinite Crisis was only the beginning. They didn't do it right enough and the editing team slipped up. How many times can we trust the guys saying everything is fixed. 

I remember the quote that there must be a crisis every so often to keep things fresh. I am of that notion as well. However, this isn't a crisis. This is armageddon. And OUR heroes from how it looks don't even have a chance to save us from the blood red skies. We instead have impostors. Our DCU is hinged upon dopplegangers and if I may borrow from the good doctor have not's and never were's. 


This could seriously sink the ship. If they have to write an open letter to retailers explaining themselves and telling them not to panic they I think it's a friggin sign that someone needs to step back and reconsider this nonsense.

This is just as bad as calling the 2005 Doctor Who series "series 1" yet there were 40 plus years of history behind it.

I don't mind the other renumberings but this is just foolish and unneeded. I mean, take these books out of regular continuity and make it a LOTDK status book if you must. But just DON'T renumber it.

I for one am so tired of DC playing with their fans in teasing them on certain things and then 6 months later deciding to grow a pair and actually do it. It completely takes away from the quality of the story itself.

A perfect example is the return of Jason. I for one believe that it would have been perfect had he actually been Hush instead of it being Tommy Elliot. They teased us and then 6 months down the line they brought him back in a really cheap and predictable way.

Or if they wanted to reboot everything why didn't they just bring everyone back from the dead in Blackest Night? We could have had tons of great new stories with older characters yet continuity still intact. 


As I said before. Knives will never defeat guns. The only way we can truly win is by a voice. The voice of the many. And may our voice be a purging fire.
